The Benefits of Disney Vacation Club: Why You Don’t Buy DVC for the Perks (But They’re Nice!)
For Disney lovers who dream of returning to the parks year after year, the Disney Vacation Club (DVC) is a magical option that allows you to make Disney memories while saving money on long-term accommodations. DVC is Disney’s version of a vacation ownership program or timeshare, where members purchase points that can be used for stays at DVC resorts or partner properties. But here’s the thing—you don’t buy DVC for the perks. While the benefits are nice, the true value lies in securing future Disney vacations at today’s prices. Let's dive into why DVC might be right for you, the perks you get, and why those perks, while great, shouldn’t be your primary motivation for buying in.
The Real Value: Guaranteed Disney Vacations
1. Long-Term Savings on Accommodations
The main reason people invest in DVC is for long-term savings. When you become a DVC member, you’re essentially prepaying for years of Disney vacations at today’s rates. Considering the rising cost of Disney resorts, this can be a huge financial advantage if you visit regularly.
Here’s how it works: You buy a set number of points based on your family’s vacation habits. These points can be used to book accommodations at DVC resorts or even non-DVC resorts, giving you flexibility. The more points you have, the more nights or larger accommodations you can book. Since DVC pricing remains relatively consistent, you’re protected from the inevitable price hikes on Disney hotels.
The truth is, you’ll probably buy your first set of points thinking it will be enough—but soon you’ll realize it’s not, and that’s perfectly fine because you’ll end up buying more! Next come the annual passes, special events, and even more points. DVC has a way of turning into a magical (and addictive) journey to a life filled with Disney, which I definitely don’t mind. For a detailed breakdown of the long-term costs and benefits, check out my full DVC guide in the Disney Vacation Club Overview blog.
2. Flexibility with Point Usage
DVC points are incredibly flexible. Members can use their points at various DVC resorts at Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and even international destinations like Aulani in Hawaii and Disney’s Vero Beach Resort in Florida. Plus, points can be used for non-Disney vacations through the RCI Exchange Program, offering options all over the world.
You also have control over how you use your points each year. Want to skip a year? You can bank your points for the next. Need more points? You can borrow from the next year’s allotment. This flexibility is perfect for families whose vacation needs might change from year to year.
3. Premium Accommodations
DVC resorts are some of the best on Disney property. They feature spacious villas with multiple bedrooms, full kitchens, and even laundry facilities—ideal for families who need more space or want to save on meals by cooking in-room. The range of options includes cozy studios, one- and two-bedroom villas, and even luxurious Grand Villas for larger groups. Whether you prefer the tropical paradise of Disney’s Polynesian Villas or the Victorian elegance of Disney’s Grand Floridian, DVC members enjoy access to some of the most sought-after Disney accommodations.
The Perks: Nice Bonuses, but Not the Main Attraction
While DVC is primarily about locking in your Disney vacations, the additional perks are the icing on the cake. But remember, these perks shouldn’t be your main reason for buying in, as they can change over time and are never guaranteed.
1. Discounts on Dining, Merchandise, and Events
One of the most popular DVC perks is the range of discounts available across Walt Disney World and Disneyland. DVC members often receive discounts of up to 20% on dining and merchandise, which can add up quickly, especially for frequent visitors.
Additionally, DVC members get discounts on special ticketed events like Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Some tours and experiences also offer reduced pricing for members, making those extra experiences a little more affordable. Don’t make the mistake that I did - you get a major discount on VIP Tours - which I did not know until after I got home. There is a list of discounts on the DVC member website.
2. Access to Exclusive Lounges
As a DVC member, you’ll have access to member-only lounges, providing a peaceful break from the parks. For example, the Epcot Member Lounge is located in the Imagination Pavilion and offers complimentary snacks, drinks, and charging stations. Another exclusive location is the Top of the World Lounge at Disney’s Bay Lake Tower, which gives DVC members a prime viewing spot for Magic Kingdom fireworks, plus access to a chic rooftop bar. And soon one will be at Magic Kingdom Park!
These lounges are a great way to relax and recharge during a busy day at the parks, but they shouldn’t be the primary reason you buy into DVC. - This perk may be going away. There is a new membership that is coming starting next year, I will be sure to write about it, but it is a good reminder, DO NOT BUY FOR THE PERKS!
3. Moonlight Magic Events
DVC hosts Moonlight Magic, which are after-hours events at the parks just for members. These events feature shorter wait times for attractions, free food and drinks, character meet-and-greets, and exclusive entertainment. While they’re a fantastic perk, these events are limited, and spots can fill up quickly. It’s a nice bonus if you’re already planning a trip during the event dates, but not something to rely on when deciding whether to purchase DVC.
We love Moonlight Magic and will be heading to our 3rd event! These are FREE after hours events and are so much fun and really make you feel loved as a member.
4. Discounted Annual Passes
DVC members can often purchase discounted annual passes, making frequent visits even more affordable. This is especially valuable for those who live nearby or plan to visit the parks more than once a year. However, passholder availability can change, so it’s not a guaranteed benefit. This is the only reason I have an annual pass - being able to save about $600 on annual pass is very worth it for our family.
Disney Vacation Club Member Only Cruises
A Disney Vacation Club Member-Only Cruise is exactly what it sounds like—a Disney cruise reserved exclusively for DVC members and their guests. These cruises are offered periodically and are a chance for members to experience Disney Cruise Line in a more intimate, community-driven environment.
Why Join a DVC Member-Only Cruise?
Exclusive Perks & Entertainment
These cruises often feature unique entertainment, special guests (including Disney Imagineers or DVC leadership), and exclusive events tailored for members. You can expect themed parties, early access to certain activities, and special meet-and-greets with characters who aren't typically available on standard sailings.Member Gifts & Surprises
As part of these special cruises, DVC members often receive complimentary gifts and surprises in their staterooms, adding to the sense of exclusivity. These might include custom DVC merchandise, limited-edition pins, or artwork designed just for that cruise.Small-Scale Experience
With a smaller crowd of like-minded Disney fans, the atmosphere on a DVC Member-Only Cruise feels more personal. Members frequently share a sense of community, as everyone aboard is part of the DVC family, allowing for meaningful connections with fellow Disney enthusiasts.Destinations & Itineraries
Disney has hosted these cruises to some of the most stunning destinations. Past itineraries have included the Bahamas, the Caribbean, Alaska, and the Mediterranean. While destinations are key, it’s the exclusive onboard experience that truly sets these cruises apart.
Our experience on the Galactic Starcruiser Disney Vacation Club Member-Only Cruise was truly one of a kind. From the moment we boarded, we were treated to exclusive gifts that set the tone for a very special voyage. One of the highlights was having Ashley Eckstein, the voice of Ahsoka Tano from Star Wars: The Clone Wars, onboard with her "Space Crew." Not only did she engage with guests and share her love for all things Star Wars, but each of us also received personalized autograph books from her—a unique souvenir that isn’t offered on regular voyages. This added an extra layer of magic, making the event feel incredibly personal and memorable.
But the magic didn’t stop there. We connected with fellow DVC members on the cruise, forming lasting friendships. What’s special about DVC-exclusive events like this is the sense of community and camaraderie. Everyone onboard shares a passion for Disney, and since we know we'll all be returning to the parks in the future, there’s a built-in understanding that we’ll meet again on another magical adventure. It felt less like a typical vacation and more like being part of a Disney family.
This sense of connection is one of the best parts of these DVC Member-Only experiences. You aren’t just meeting random people on vacation—you’re bonding with fellow fans who love Disney just as much as you do, and those friendships tend to last far beyond the cruise itself.
Atlantic Dance Hall DVC Events
These events are typically free for Disney Vacation Club members but require an RSVP. Because of the venue's limited capacity, it's essential to register for the event as soon as it’s announced. Keep an eye on the DVC member website and newsletters for updates about upcoming events at the Atlantic Dance Hall.
Member-Only Celebrations
DVC regularly hosts private parties at the Atlantic Dance Hall, turning this nightlife hotspot into a haven for members and their guests. These events often coincide with holidays, special occasions, or milestones for the Disney Vacation Club itself, offering members a fun way to celebrate their Disney passion in style.
Unique Entertainment
Expect live music, themed dance parties, and interactive experiences that can range from karaoke nights to throwback 80s and 90s-themed events. With a DJ spinning upbeat tunes, a large dance floor, and a balcony offering views of Disney's nighttime entertainment, it’s a great venue to unwind with fellow Disney fans.
Complimentary Refreshments & Exclusive Treats
DVC events at the Atlantic Dance Hall often come with complimentary refreshments, including drinks, light snacks, and desserts. Themed cocktails, along with exclusive Disney treats, make these evenings extra special.
Special Character Meet-and-Greets
Like the Member-Only Cruises, you can often find rare characters attending these events, making for great photo opportunities. Characters that you may not typically see in the parks add a touch of magic to the party.
Networking and Community Building
One of the most rewarding aspects of attending DVC events at the Atlantic Dance Hall is the chance to mingle with fellow members. These events foster a close-knit sense of community, and many DVC members use them as an opportunity to bond over shared Disney experiences.
Things to Consider Before Buying DVC
While the perks are fun, remember that DVC is a long-term commitment. You’re purchasing a real estate interest that lasts decades, and with that comes annual dues for the maintenance and upkeep of the properties. These dues can increase over time, so you’ll need to factor them into your long-term budget.
Another thing to keep in mind is that DVC availability can be competitive during peak times. You’ll need to plan well in advance to secure popular resorts or holidays, especially if you’re aiming for a specific room type or resort.
Don’t Buy DVC for the Perks, Buy It for the Vacations
At the end of the day, the primary reason to purchase DVC is for the consistent, long-term value it offers Disney fans who visit the parks regularly. The ability to secure premium accommodations at today’s prices is the true magic of Disney Vacation Club. The discounts, events, and lounges are certainly nice to have, but they shouldn’t drive your decision to join. Additionally they are constantly changing.
If you’re considering DVC, think about how often your family vacations at Disney, how much you’re willing to commit long-term, and how you like to vacation. DVC can be a fantastic way to make Disney a part of your family’s traditions for years to come—just remember, the perks are a cherry on top, not the whole sundae!
