Universal Studios Hollywood

We had an amazing time at Universal Studios Hollywood, where movie magic comes to life! Our favorite part of the day was Super Nintendo World, the newest immersive land that brings the beloved video game universe to life. Let this be your guide if you're wondering how to have an epic day at Universal Studios. We rode every ride and experienced the whole park from open to close. The only attraction we skipped was the backlot tour, as it was 45 minutes long. We prioritized Super Nintendo World, and the minions ride broke down at the end of the night while we were in line.

How to Plan your Day at Universal Studios Hollywood

Our day was mainly focused on rides, but we did manage to catch the awesome WaterWorld show. We didn't see any other shows and only met a few characters. Just like any vacation take a look at a map and decide what is the priority for your family for the trip. Even though this is a smaller park, you cannot get everything done in one day, especially if you want to experience Super Nintendo World to the fullest.

Our priority was Super Nintendo World, so we planned our entire day around that area. We managed to experience almost every ride at Universal Studios Hollywood, but we didn't get to enjoy all the other attractions because our main focus was Super Nintendo World and the rides. When we go back, I would include some of the other experiences as well. We didn't use the express pass, so we waited about 3 to 4 hours in line. This made it impossible for us to do the backlot tour. After Super Nintendo World, we split into two groups - one group went with the little kids to do activities, while the other group rode rides like Jurassic World and Transformers. I personally didn't get to ride the big rides because I stayed with the toddlers and visited attractions like Silly Fun Land, a minions-themed land, and The Secret Life of Pets.

Our only downtime was a two-hour break at Toadstool Café. We were exhausted but had a great day. Our intention to grab In-N-Out Burger after the park was thwarted by the long line, so we opted for delicious New York pizza instead across the street.

If you're wondering if Universal Studios Hollywood can be a one-day add-on, I would say yes. I don't think you have to plan an entire trip around Universal Studios Hollywood. I believe that's why it's part of the Go City pass, as they know people don't plan trips solely to visit Universal Studios Hollywood. Getting the express pass would make your day less stressful and give you the opportunity to experience some of the other attractions and meet more characters, especially if you have a larger group. We didn't get it, but if you want to ensure you can do things like the Jurassic encounter and the backlot tour, then the express pass would be helpful.

Cost:

Before we get started, let's discuss the financials. We purchased discounted tickets through Undercover Tourist for a 3-day GO City Pass. This pass included one day at Universal Studios, and we used the other two days for Knott's Berry Farm water park and the Long Beach Aquarium. This is the most efficient way to use your ticket, and you can definitely get a good value for your money if you want to do Hollywood Bus tours or visit the Chinese Grumman Theatre all in one day.

Each Go City pass costs $242.35 per child and $261.06 for an adult. Additionally, we paid $30 for early entry to Super Nintendo World, which was definitely worth it. We wanted to make sure we rode Bowser's Castle without waiting in a long line. If we had the express pass, we wouldn't have done this. I don't know if the express pass is worth it at Universal Studios Hollywood. In Orlando at Universal Studios Orlando, it's definitely worth it, but you can get away without it at Hollywood. It's a much smaller park with fewer rides.

Because we got there super early for early entry we paid $35 for General Parking instead of upgrading. The downside to General parking is that it is about a 15 minute walk to the park, but we thought the savings was worth it, and no one was there that early that wasn’t going to Super Nintendo World so the garage was empty.

We saved money by having breakfast at the hotel. Whenever we're on vacation, we always try to stay at an Embassy Suites because the rooms are all suites and they include breakfast. We always request a two-queen room, and there is a pull-out couch in the living room. The breakfast is typically a hot buffet with an omelet station and costs under $300 a night! Not bad for the 6 of us! We brought snacks that we had purchased from Target the day before - we had them delivered to the hotel. Then Starbucks inside the park gave us giant water for free so we could refill the water bottles that we had brought. At the end of the night, we picked up a $27 giant pie from NY Pizza that was 2 minutes from Universal.

Here is the breakdown of our expenses at the park:

  • $170.23 at Toadstool Café (this includes a 20% military discount; Universal extends a 20% discount to military personnel on almost everything)

  • $15 on treats

  • $51.39 on 6 frozen Butterbeers

  • $9.15 at Power Up Cafe for a Mario Pretzel & Cheese

  • $20.25 on a souvenir headband with a 20% discount

  • $231.26 on 6 Power Up Bands with a special addition of the Golden Mario with a 20% military discount

Total without the Go City Pass $739.28

Tips for Parking at Universal Studios Hollywood:

  • Arrive Early: The earlier you arrive, the better your chances of getting a parking spot closer to the entrance, even in General Parking.

  • Consider the Length of Your Visit: If you plan to stay all day, General Parking might be sufficient, but for shorter visits, Preferred or Front Gate Parking can save time.

  • Use Valet for Convenience: If you're in a hurry or want the most convenient experience, valet parking is worth considering, especially during peak times.

  • Check Online for Discounts: Occasionally, Universal Studios Hollywood may offer parking discounts or packages that include parking, so it’s worth checking the official website before your visit.

Universal Studio App

You need it to download your tickets, but outside of that and keeping coins we did not use it that much. Also the. wait times were very off.

Express Pass

The Universal Express Pass is a premium ticket option at Universal Studios Hollywood that allows guests to skip regular lines at most attractions, shows, and rides, providing a more streamlined and efficient park experience. This pass is available as an add-on to your regular admission ticket. While it may not be essential, it can be very useful. For example, if we had planned on doing the backlot tour, getting the express pass would have saved us about 2-3 hours in lines and would have made early entry into Super Nintendo World unnecessary, as it has an express pass lane. However, they are quite expensive. We visited during the busy summer season and we were surprised how easily we got on ride never waiting more that about 35 - 40 minutes. Did we get to do everything, no, but we had an amazing day. It's important to check the crowd calendar from Undercover Tourist.

Where to Purchase the Universal Express Pass

  1. Online:

    • The Universal Express Pass can be purchased online through the Universal Studios Hollywood website. It is recommended that you buy in advance, as the passes can sell out, especially during peak times.

    • For convenience, you can often find the pass bundled with your regular admission ticket.

  2. At the Park:

    • If you decide to upgrade to the Express Pass on the day of your visit, you can purchase it at various locations throughout the park, including Guest Services and ticket booths.

    • However, availability on the day of your visit is not guaranteed, especially during busy periods.

How Many Days do you need?

You do not need more than two days; 1 day with the express pass is more than enough to complete everything. If you want to eliminate the need for the express pass, two days will allow you to accomplish everything at a more relaxed pace. If you are staying for two days, stay close to your resort so you can take an afternoon break. Even with the break, you will have more than enough time to do everything. Will my family do two days? No, probably not. We will just get the express pass next time and get it all done in one day since we have now been.

Where to Stay?

My family chose to stay far from Universal Studios Hollywood to prioritize comfort over proximity. Even though we only had one day at the theme park, we also wanted to visit the University of Southern California and downtown LA. My sister, who has one child, stayed in downtown LA for convenience. However, my family prefers Embassy Suites because it offers two full rooms, three beds, and a complimentary full breakfast. We left early in the morning to avoid LA traffic, and our drive took about 35 minutes. Staying closer to the resort would have meant getting two rooms and paying more for breakfast. So, we decided to prioritize budget and comfort and were prepared for the drives to and from the park.

Things for Littles

When it comes to Universal Studios, it seems to lack a bit for the little kids. They focus more on thrills and experiences rather than catering to younger visitors. Even at Universal Studios Hollywood, there still seems to be a lack of attractions for the little ones. Most rides designed for families have height requirements, making it difficult for younger kids to participate. For example, we couldn't go on the minion's ride. However, there are still plenty of areas for kids to enjoy. Their time was also filled by stroller naps and a great break at Toadstool café. We also got to meet some characters and took a break at the Baby Care Center. Let me give you a rundown of everything that's available for you and your kids.

Also, Universal Studios Hollywood offers a Family Center equipped with changing tables, nursing areas, and feeding stations. These are great places to take a break and care for your little one's needs. Most importantly, there was air conditioning.

Here are all the areas where you can find something for little ones.

Super Silly Fun Land

  • Play Area: This outdoor play zone is inspired by the movie Despicable Me. It's a colorful, interactive space where toddlers can climb, explore, and have fun. The area includes water play features, so bring a change of clothes or swimwear if your toddler wants to splash around. THis is is a literal water structure in a theme park, your kids need a swim suit and you may want to bring a change of clothes for you. Its relly hard not to get wet.

  • Super Silly Fun Ride: This gentle, spinning ride is perfect for toddlers. It takes them on a fun aerial journey, and the ride's slow pace and cheerful atmosphere make it suitable for young children.

The Secret Life of Pets: Off the Leash!

  • Interactive Queue: Before boarding the ride, toddlers can enjoy the interactive queue area featuring animatronics and scenes from The Secret Life of Pets. It's the most amazing queue we've ever experienced at any theme park. At first, we thought it was the ride because it was so detailed, but thankfully it wasn't. The actual ride was a fun dark ride. I give the ride a "must do" rating. Even if the wait is 30 minutes, waiting in the queue is enjoyable as there's so much to do and see.

  • Ride Experience: This dark ride is a slow-moving, gentle attraction that takes guests through the streets of New York City as seen in the movie. The ride's pace and colorful visuals make it an enjoyable experience for toddlers.

Character Meet and Greets

  • Minions, Hello Kitty, and More: Toddlers will love meeting their favorite characters, like the Minions, Hello Kitty, and characters from The Secret Life of Pets. These meet-and-greet opportunities are perfect for creating memorable photo moments.

  • Roaming Characters: I cannot tell you who because when roaming, we only saw Dracula, but at other times there are more roaming around. The app also did not give us insight into when characters would be around.

DreamWorks Theatre Featuring Kung Fu Panda

  • Interactive Show: This indoor, 4D show is designed to be fun for all ages. It features characters from Kung Fu Panda in an adventure that combines 3D film with physical effects. The show's humor and interactive elements can be enjoyable for toddlers, though the 4D effects (like water sprays and seat movement) may be surprising to some young children.

WaterWorld Show

  • Action-Packed Show: While the stunts and action might be more appealing to older kids and adults, toddlers often enjoy the loud noises, splashing water, and excitement of the show. Just be mindful of the noise levels and sit in an area that won't be too overwhelming for your child. My toddler was asleep this entire show even with the loud blast but my other kids loved it and it was a huge win for my pre-teen.

Minion Mayhem

  • Ride and Play Area: Despicable Me Minion Mayhem is a 3D motion simulator ride, which might be too intense for toddlers, but there is an adjacent play area called Super Silly Fun Land where they can burn off some energy.

Universal Plaza

  • Relaxing Spot: This central area of the park is a great place to take a break. It's an open space with seating where you can let your toddler relax or enjoy a snack. During special events, this area may also feature seasonal decorations or character appearances. We had the most fun interactions here.

DinoPlay for Kids (Jurassic World Area)

  • Play Area: Located near the Jurassic World ride, DinoPlay is a small playground with dinosaur-themed structures perfect for climbing, sliding, and exploring. It's a nice spot for toddlers to burn off some energy while older family members experience the more intense attractions nearby.

Kid-Friendly Dining

  • Toddler-Friendly Menus: Many of the restaurants and food stands offer kid-friendly options, such as chicken tenders, macaroni and cheese, and other familiar dishes. Toadstool Cafe in Super Nintendo World is especially fun for toddlers, with its playful, themed environment.

Tips for Visiting with Toddlers

  • Plan Breaks: Schedule regular breaks to keep your toddler comfortable and happy throughout the day.

  • Bring Snacks and Drinks: While the park has many dining options, having familiar snacks and drinks on hand can help keep your toddler content between meals.

  • Check Height Requirements: Always check height requirements for rides before getting in line to avoid disappointments.

  • Bring a Stroller: We did not bring our heavy-duty stroller, but it worked out great for our little one. If you do not have one, there are hard plastic ones available for renting to get you through the day.

What Characters are at Universal Hollywood?

We met Minions, Hello Kitty, Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Poppy at Universal Studios Hollywood! The app did not help us much, but maybe following a creator who knows more about Universal Studios Hollywood would help. We loved meeting the characters
