A Complete Guide to Planning a Walt Disney World Vacation For First Timers
This blog is not complete so you are getting a sneak peak if you find it! I went ahead and published it so I can see what I looks like on my blog - feel free to use it! It should be complete by Novmeber 20, 2024!
Get ready to dive into the ultimate planning adventure! This blog is crafted especially for first-timers venturing into Walt Disney World, but, truth be told, it’s also a solid refresher for anyone who hasn’t set foot in the parks for a few years or calls another Disney location home. Disney planning can be both exciting and slightly overwhelming, especially if you’re aiming for those “I-nailed-this-vacation” vibes. But with a bit of guidance, you can craft a magical experience that suits everyone in your group (yes, even the aunt who insists that she knows Disney even though she hasn’t been for 20 years).
My hope is that this guide serves as your trusty blueprint! It will be ever changing and growing as Disney changes. You’ll find plenty of links to my other blogs where I go deeper on specific topics covered here. Plus, I’ve loaded up my site with a Disney Checklist and various PDF tools for you to download. If you want the complete booklet signup for my newsletter where you can download it for free! Because hey, why wing it when you can have a downloadable game plan?
For a bit of background, Disney World is my home park, my “Happy Place” times ten, and my goal is to help you fall head over heels for it too. As a mom of four who’s been going since I was seven, I know what it’s like to juggle everything from babies to tweens at Disney World! So, don’t let the length of this blog scare you off—this is your step-by-step guide to your entire Walt Disney World vacation.
Are you ready? Because I am thrilled to be on this planning journey with you. Let’s make some magic happen!
Here is the Truth…
You are not going to be able to do everything in one trip. There is absolutely no way. Trust me, after 30 years I have never had two trips that looked alike! My Disney trips have evolved over the years, too—we’re not full-time park people anymore. Now, we explore the resorts, try new restaurants at Disney Springs, and add a couple of fresh experiences each trip. Before you even step foot in the parks, it’s important to drop the idea of “seeing it all.” Lowering expectations right from the start saves so much stress and heartache! Plan a Disney trip based on your family’s interests, not a FOMO-fueled checklist of what everyone else says you “have to do.”
For a little perspective, nearly 60 million people visit Walt Disney World every year. It’s a place so big and filled with options that they literally built a timeshare program around it. If everything could be done in one trip, would they really need a timeshare to keep people coming back for 50 years? Walt Disney World Resort is an expansive resort, spanning approximately 25,000 acres it’s almost the size of San Francisco or twice the size of Manhattan
So if you’re tempted to go in with a color-coded, down-to-the-minute itinerary, just know that’s a recipe for disaster. Accepting upfront that you won’t get to everything makes for a much happier trip. Remember, a Disney vacation should be about creating memories that feel right for your family, not a race to check every box. And besides, there’s a reason we all keep coming back!
Choosing Your Disney Destination
If you’re here, you’ve committed to Disney World—great choice! I’ll admit, though, there were a few years when we chose the smaller, more manageable Disneyland instead. And now that I’ve started cruising, I wish I’d tried it sooner! My husband’s family always swore the Disney Cruise was amazing, and I finally get it—especially if you have little ones. There’s so much onboard that’s tailor-made for kids (and grown-ups too), making it a whole new way to enjoy that Disney magic with a bit more relaxation.
Disneyland, Disney World, Disney Cruise Line—how do you choose? It’s like deciding between chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry ice cream: they’re all delicious, but one may hit the spot just right! Each Disney experience offers unique perks, so choosing the best match for your family can be the difference between happily ever after and wishing you had a bib for all that drool-worthy Disney dining. A bit of research here saves you from needing a vacation after your vacation.

How this Guide Works
Once upon a time, I launched a detailed Disney course—but after a few months, I realized a course wasn’t the right fit for me. What I really love is creating accessible, heartfelt guides that simplify your planning and let you focus on the joy of making memories. Think of this guide as your planning hub, a go-to resource that brings together all the essential information you need to craft the best Disney vacation for you and your loved ones.
Each section in this guide gives you a quick, focused overview, with links to my more in-depth blog posts where you can find everything from navigating Character Meals to the hidden details that make Disney truly magical. There are around 30 blogs linked here, giving you a rich variety of insights. Yes, planning a Disney vacation takes time, but so does any dream trip—just like a journey to Europe. With all the memories you’ll create, Disney is worth every bit of planning, and it’s definitely not “just for kids.” As someone who’s visited Disney solo, on couples' trips, and now with my own family, I can assure you that Disney truly is for everyone.
My goal is to help infuse that same magic into every part of your trip including the planning. I want your family to have a wonderful time, and I want you as the planner to feel empowered, excited, valued and to also have a magical time.
If you’re not already following me on Instagram, be sure to connect with me there! Every single Monday since September 2022, I've hosted a Disney vacation questions box where you can ask anything about your trip. Let’s work together to make sure you have a magical vacation too!
If you have any questions between now and Monday, please ask in the comments—chances are, someone else has the same question, and I’m here to help. Let’s make sure this Disney adventure is everything you’ve dreamed of and more. You’ve got this, and I’m rooting for you every step of the way!
Looking Ahead: What's Coming in 2025 and Beyond
Here’s the scoop on all the exciting new things coming to Disney World over the next couple of years! We’re in for some major changes, so let’s break it down by park, from things that just happened to what’s coming down the line.
Recent Highlights
Test Track Reimagining kicked off June 17, 2024. The new design, inspired by the original World of Motion, promises to blend nostalgia with innovation. And of course, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure just opened on June 28, 2024, transforming the former Splash Mountain into a lively bayou ride inspired by The Princess and the Frog. Another big one is the new Lightning Lane System which launched on July 24, 2024, aiming to make Genie+ and Lightning Lane reservations more flexible for guests.
Coming Soon
Disney’s Animal Kingdom is saying goodbye to “It’s Tough to Be a Bug” for a new Zootopia-themed show inside the Tree of Life, plus, there are big changes for DinoLand U.S.A.! TriceraTop Spin and Fossil Gun Games (closing January 12, 2025) and Dino-Rama are set to close soon, with DINOSAUR to follow in 2025. The area will transform into a Tropical Americas land, complete with an Encanto-themed attraction through the Madrigal family’s casita, a new carousel, and a quick-service dining spot. An exciting twist? DINOSAUR will likely be re-themed to Indiana Jones by 2027, making it a must-visit for adventure lovers.
EPCOT: While waiting for the updated Test Track to reopen in 2025, guests can also look forward to a brand-new lounge near Spaceship Earth for relaxing and taking in the views. This lounge could offer a unique spot to enjoy EPCOT’s nighttime show, perfect for those summer evenings.
Magic Kingdom is getting a Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired tavern in Adventureland, opening in 2025! Plus, a new nighttime parade, Disney Starlight, will launch that summer, featuring beloved characters from Peter Pan, Frozen, and Encanto. Later on, Magic Kingdom is expanding with two new lands: a Villains-themed area with thrilling attractions, shopping, and dining, and a Cars-themed area in Frontierland. Work on these areas is expected to begin in 2025.
Hollywood Studios is going big with Monsters, Inc. Land in 2025! The star attraction here is a new suspended coaster set in Monstropolis, along with character meet-and-greets and themed shopping. And for Star Wars fans, a new Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run storyline featuring characters from The Mandalorian is expected to debut in 2026, giving guests even more reason to explore Batuu.
Setting Up a Disney Vacation Framework
Planning a Disney vacation is like building a gingerbread house—it looks simple, but one wrong move and you’re stuck with frosting on your nose and walls that won’t stand! A solid framework lets you create a flexible schedule, set realistic expectations, and avoid common Disney planning pitfalls (like attempting to book 25 rides in one day). Without a good foundation, even the best-laid plans can end up with tired feet and cranky kids, so let’s keep it balanced!
