Do you need a Disney Travel Agent?
Have you ever considered using a travel agent for your Walt Disney World vacation? Are you skeptical about whether you even need one? Let me help clarify how a Disney travel agent can assist you, what they’re required to do, and some dos and don’ts when working with one. I even use a travel agent for our Universal trips and Disney Cruises!
Busting Myths About Disney Travel Agents
Myth #1: “I don’t want to lose control of my trip.”
Truth: Good news—you won’t! A Disney travel agent is there to assist you, guide you through the planning process, and ensure you don’t miss any critical steps. However, you’re still in charge. You can make all the final decisions. If there’s something you don’t want to follow, you don’t have to. The agent’s job is to make your planning as stress-free as possible by booking resort reservations, securing park tickets, and providing updates on changes or news from Walt Disney World. You are in complete control of your trip! If you want to modify a dining reservation or add something to your itinerary, you can easily do that on your own without waiting for a travel agent to make those small adjustments for you.
However, travel agents can be incredibly helpful when it comes to more time-consuming tasks, such as calling Disney to modify resort reservations or taking advantage of new sales and discounts. That’s right—travel agents will automatically apply any eligible Disney deals to your booking, ensuring you save money without lifting a finger. Having a travel agent can make all the difference, especially when those savings start rolling in!
Myth #2: Using a Disney travel agent is more expensive.
Truth: This is one of the biggest misconceptions. Disney travel agents' services are typically free to you! They earn their commission through Disney, meaning you get their expertise, planning assistance, and insider tips without any added cost. In fact, they often help you save money by monitoring promotions and applying discounts to your reservations.
Myth #3: You can’t make changes to your trip if you book with a travel agent.
Truth: Even if you book through a travel agent, you’re not locked out of making changes or updates to your plans. While your agent can handle adjustments for you, such as modifying resort stays or applying discounts, you still have access to your My Disney Experience account to customize plans, manage dining reservations, and make updates at any time.
What Does a Disney Travel Agent Do?
Here’s what a Disney travel agent typically helps with:
Resort Reservations: They’ll book your accommodations and ensure they meet your needs.
Park Tickets: Agents secure your tickets and provide advice on the best options for your group.
Dining Plans: If Disney dining plans are available, they’ll help book them.
General Information: Agents provide tips about the parks, Disney Cruise Line, or Adventures by Disney itineraries.
Some travel agents go above and beyond, assisting with details like:
Booking dining reservations.
Helping with Lightning Lane strategies.
Advising on the best times to visit attractions.
Not all travel agents plan out individual days or create detailed itineraries unless it’s specifically included in their services. If this level of support is what you’re looking for, make sure to find an agent who offers it—and be prepared for it to sometimes come with an additional cost. Honestly, if I were a travel agent and you wanted a customized itinerary for every single day of your trip, I’d charge extra for that too! So, don’t be surprised if this type of personalized planning is offered as an add-on service—it’s often worth the investment.
How to Pick the Right Travel Agent
Choosing the right travel agent is essential. Here are some tips to help:
Ask for Referrals: Recommendations from friends or family can point you to reliable agents.
Assess Their Style: Make sure their planning vibe matches yours. For instance, if you prefer laid-back vacations, an over-scheduled planner might not be the right fit.
Discuss Fees: Most agents don’t charge extra, but some offer premium services for a fee. Clarify this upfront.
Gauge Their Involvement: Decide how active you want them to be in your planning. Do you need them to handle every detail or just the big-ticket items?
Evaluate Extras: Some agents include bonus perks, like creating detailed itineraries or booking hard-to-get reservations. Make sure these extras align with your needs.
Dos and Don’ts When Working with a Travel Agent
Do:
Commit to using their services before asking them to do significant work. Travel agents don’t get paid until after you take your trip, so ghosting them after they’ve done extensive planning isn’t fair.
Communicate your needs and preferences clearly.
Ask questions if you’re unsure about anything.
Don’t:
Expect them to plan your days unless that’s explicitly part of their services.
Be afraid to provide feedback. If their suggestions don’t align with your vision, let them know.
