Disney Infants: Everything You Need to Know!
Imagine the joy of introducing your little one to the magical world of Disney at an early age. The sights, sounds, and experiences of Disney World can provide a wonderful opportunity for parents to bond with their babies and create lifelong memories. Taking things at a slower pace can allow you to fully appreciate all the details that make Disney World and Disneyland so special. And with special accommodations for families with infants, you can focus on creating unforgettable moments with your little one.
What is a Disney Infant?
A Disney Infant is any child that is under three years of age.
Park entry:
Children under 3 are entitled to enter the park for free. They do not need to have a park ticket or reservation, but it is recommended to create a profile for them in your My Disney Experience or Disneyland App.
Infants Dining at Disney:
In some restaurants that serve buffets or family-style meals, it is acceptable for infants to eat food off the plate of an adult. However, in prefixed dining establishments, Disney Infants are typically offered a predetermined list of complimentary items to choose from. Similarly, at a la carte restaurants in Disney, infants are permitted to share food from an adult's plate. However, if you order something specifically for your infant, there may be an additional fee. Different items we have been served include fruit cups, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese, and mini cupcakes.
Accommodations for Infants at Disney Resort Collection Hotels:
If you are planning a trip to Disney World and you have an infant under three years old, then you can save some money by knowing that they can stay in your room for free. To ensure that the Resort can keep track of the guest count, you just need to include them in your room reservation. Adding an infant to your room reservation will not increase your room rate. For example, if you are a family of six with an infant, Disney World will consider you a family of 5+1. So, you can book a room that sleeps five people instead of upgrading to a family suite, which can save you money. However, keep in mind that the studio 5th sleeper may be a tight fit with six people in one room.
Baby Care Centers
Baby Care Centers provide parents with infants and toddlers a range of helpful amenities, besides privacy. These fully staffed centers are open during regular park hours and are free to use. Each full-service facility features:
A private nursing room with comfortable rocking chairs
A changing room with tables and a women's restroom
A feeding area with highchairs
A kitchen equipped with a microwave and sink
A main room with seating, a table, and a television
An on-site shop that sells formula, baby food, juice, diapers, wipes, sunscreen, over-the-counter medications, and clothing.
Baby care centers are typically for children aged 5 and under. They even have small toilets for those who are potty training.
Breastfeeding In the Parks:
To make your nursing experience more comfortable, it's best to plan ahead. Wear nursing-friendly tops, such as those with easy openings or stretchy fabrics, to make it easier for your baby to access your breast. You can also bring a nursing cover if you prefer to use one. Keep yourself hydrated by carrying plenty of water with you, as breastfeeding can be a thirsty task (there are refillable water stations located in the park. Use your MDE app to locate them - Florida water is awful, get my water bottle here.) Also, remember to bring snacks to keep your energy levels up.
In addition, it's a good idea to pack extra nursing pads to avoid leaks and a change of clothes for both you and your baby in case of any spills or accidents. It's also worth noting that some rides may not allow pregnant women or nursing mothers to ride due to safety concerns, so it's best to check the park guidelines before you go.
By planning ahead and being prepared, you can have a more enjoyable and stress-free nursing experience during your visit to Walt Disney World.
What Disney Infants Wear to the Park:
Part of the fun of going to Disney with our little ones is dressing them up in cute Disney outfits and costumes. However, when visiting Disney World in Florida or Disneyland in California, it's important to consider the weather. Florida can be extremely hot for about six months of the year, so it's essential to avoid costumes that can irritate your kids. On the other hand, California can get quite chilly in the evenings, so it's always a good idea to have a backup outfit ready.
When planning outfits for the parks, it's best not to stress out too much. While it's great to have cute coordinating outfits for your toddler, I always give them the choice between two choices if they start negotiating in the morning about clothes. This will prevent you from running your day or getting your toddler upset if they don't want to wear the outfit you picked out. Remember, the goal is to have fun and create lasting memories with your family. Also have a backup outfit ready in the diaper bag when you head to the parks.
Snacks
Traveling with a toddler can be challenging, especially when it comes to keeping them fed and hydrated. It's important to encourage your child to drink water throughout the trip. You can bring their own water bottle, which is a great way to ensure they stay hydrated and avoid sugary drinks. Additionally, don't forget to pack some treats like cookies or granola bars for when your little one needs a pick-me-up. It's best to pack a variety of snacks that are easy to eat and do not require refrigeration. Some great options include cut-up fruits and vegetables, crackers, and cheese sticks. Lastly, it's important to note that you can bring a smaller cooler to Disney.
ALL THE GEAR
Traveling with toddlers can be quite challenging, and packing the right items is crucial. If you're planning a trip to Disney, it's important to choose a stroller that meets the park's restrictions. Double and inline strollers are allowed, while wagons are not permitted unless there's a pre-approved medical necessity. The stroller should be easy to maneuver, quickly foldable, and able to lay flat for your child's nap time. Additionally, it should have a large basket to carry your belongings and a large sunshade to protect your child from the sun.
It's always a good idea to bring a baby carrier to wear your baby, whether they're younger or even toddlers, as sometimes they just want to be close to you when they get overstimulated.
Naps and Midday breaks at Disney
As members of the Disney Vacation Club, we usually stay on-property at Walt Disney World. However, I always take a break for a couple of hours to rest, no matter which resort we are staying at. At Disneyland, it's a bit more challenging since they only have three resort hotels, but many hotels are within walking distance. Moreover, they have incredible park hours that can make for a long day. So, I either take a break or plan early nights and late mornings to see the nighttime shows.
During our visit to Walt Disney World in August 2022, we stayed off-property for the first time in six years. When we took a break at the park, we found an indoor restaurant where our child could take a 2 1/2 hour nap. We could also use one of the rocking chairs at the baby care center to soothe her. Alternatively, we could have gone back to our hotel room. However, finding a place at the park was an easy thing to do.
Enchanted Extras
There are limited options for children under three when it comes to Enchanted Extras at Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort. However, one great option is to take them to Harmony Barbershop for their first haircut. It's a fun memory for our youngest. It's important to note that most Enchanted Extras require the child to be three years old or older.
Rider Switch
When visiting Walt Disney World with older siblings, utilizing the Rider Switch program can be a game-changer for families. This convenient feature allows one adult to wait with the baby while the other adult enjoys an attraction. After the first adult experiences the ride, they can switch with the second adult, who then gets to enjoy the attraction without waiting in line again. This system not only maximizes the fun for everyone in the family but also ensures that the baby is well cared for and comfortable, making it easier to manage the varying needs of all family members while minimizing wait times. By taking advantage of Rider Switch, families can create a more enjoyable and seamless experience at the parks.
Potty Training at Disney Parks
When it comes to potty training at Walt Disney World, there are plenty of restrooms and companion bathrooms available, which makes the process easier. Although I never intended to potty train my child at the park, my fourth child decided to potty train herself and we had a trip planned, so I had to keep it going, but now I have all the information you need for potty training at Walt Disney World and beyond.
Attention all germaphobe moms! Can you please raise your hands? I'm one of you! Toilet seat covers are a must-have for us. They allow our child to hold on to the potty and feel more secure. Also, I hate it when my girls pull down their pants and parts of their underwear touch the toilet seat because they're so little. The toliet seat covers prevents that from happening.
LooReady is my preferred band because you can flush it and it breaks down in the toilet. However its is not big enough for potty training, so I use the larger covers and throw them in the trash when I am done.
To make it more comfortable for my child, I always put the seat cover down first and then put a foldable travel potty seat that goes on top of it, which reduces the size of the toilet and makes it less scary for your toddler. It helps to stay close to your child while they're using the restroom, especially with automatic flushing toilets, as they may get scared and try to jump off.
At the Baby Care Centers, there are smaller potties available, which are much more comfortable for toddlers.
Room Requests at the Disney Resort Collection Hotels for Infants and Toddlers
When traveling to Walt Disney World Resort with a baby or toddler, ensuring your little one has a comfortable sleeping arrangement is crucial for a happy vacation. One great option is to request a mini crib from your resort. These metal cribs come equipped with a crib mattress and flat sheets, providing a safe space for your child to rest. To add a touch of home, consider bringing your own fitted sheet—Pottery Barn's Chablis sheets are a fantastic choice, known for their incredible softness and comfort. However, it's important to note that mini cribs are subject to availability, so it’s a good idea to request one as early as possible.
If you’re staying in a smaller room, a pack-and-play might be the way to go. These versatile sleeping options can be easily moved out of the way when not in use, allowing for more space in your accommodations.
If a crib isn’t your preference, don’t forget to ask for bedrails. Most resorts have them available for your peace of mind, and they are simple to install, often requiring you to do it yourself. This can be particularly important because many beds at Walt Disney World Resort have been raised to allow for extra storage underneath, which means that without bedrails, a significant fall could occur if your child rolls out during the night. Taking these steps will help ensure that your little one sleeps soundly, leaving you free to enjoy all the magic Disney has to offer.
Does Disney offer footstools?
Unfortunately, the Little Mermaid Rooms at Caribbean Beach Resort are the only accommodations that have footstools. Hopefully, Disney will incorporate this design into other rooms as they continue to reimagine them.
Renting baby items
Renting baby items at Walt Disney World can help you travel lighter and ensure that your little one has everything they need during your visit. There are several options available for renting baby gear at Disney World.
One option is BabyQuip, a full-service rental company where you can get a wide range of baby gear, including strollers, cribs, high chairs, and more. You can reserve your items in advance by calling the company or visiting their website. They will deliver the gear directly to your resort, and you can use it throughout your stay. When you're ready to leave, simply leave the items in your room for pick up.
Another option is Kingdom Strollers or Orlando Stroller Rentals if you are flying and cannot pack all your strollers. These companies offer similar items and services to BabyQuip, but with potentially lower prices. They also provide delivery and pick-up services to Disney World hotels.
Minnie Vans and Car Seats
Are you aware of the fact that Walt Disney World has its own rideshare service called Minnie Vans? We absolutely enjoy indulging ourselves with an occasional ride on the red polka-dotted “van.” What sets this van apart is that it is allowed to drop you off right in front of the park, instead of having to go to the designated rideshare locations that are typically further away. In the case of Magic Kingdom, these locations are at the Ticket and Transportation Center. Although this service is more expensive than your traditional rideshare, costing us $41 from Art of Animation, it is worth the extra cost. Disney has partnered with Lyft and uses its app for booking. Minnie Vans can sometimes cost twice as much as Uber XL, which is what my family needs due to car seats. Minnie Vans come equipped with two Graco Forever (perfect for newborn to 120 pounds) car seats, and we were informed that in Florida, anyone under the age of seven requires a car seat, making this a huge bonus.
Car Seat Laws in Florida
When it comes to transportation with children, the rules around car seats can be confusing. Here is what you need to know for different types of transportation:
- Shuttle Buses (such as MEARS): Car seats are not legally required on motor coaches, so you don't need one if you take a direct shuttle service. However, since these vehicles are usually smaller than a bus, you may prefer to use a car seat, booster or other appropriate restraint. Foldable or inflatable booster seats can be a good option.
- Uber/Lyft and renting a car: If your child is five years old or younger, they must be in a car seat. If you are traveling with an infant, it's best to bring your own car seat. Unfortunately, most ride-share companies do not provide car seats that are suitable for infants. The available car seats are generally best for children aged 2-5 years.
- Minnie Vans: These Disney-specific vehicles come with two Graco 4EVER car seats that can be used rear-facing for infants and forward-facing for toddlers and older children. They are a great option if you want to ensure your child's safety and comfort during your Disney vacation. Minnie Vans can now also pick you up from MCO. You can see my toddler pictured in a Minnie Van, living her best life in her front-facing car seat.
Disney Resort Pools for Infants & Toddlers
Most resort pools have kid-friendly amenities that cater to toddlers. These can range from a shallow entry point, a small splash pad, or a waiting pool. In short, there is something for every toddler at every resort pool. Additionally, life jackets are available at every pool. If you prefer, you can also bring your own US Coast Guard or UL-approved flotation device, such as a puddle jumper
Slower Disney Pace & Skip the Park Hopper
When my first child turned one year old, I took him to Disney World for the first time. I was so excited because it was my happy place. However, despite my prior knowledge and understanding of the parks, I felt exhausted and didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. It was a magical vacation but it felt like we never slowed down. Managing a stroller, diaper changes, naps, and everything else was overwhelming. We were also with a large group, and everyone wanted to do their own thing. This experience made me realize that I needed to change the way I approached Disney. I learned to slow down the pace of my Disney vacation, and it made it much more enjoyable for me and my family. I allowed my toddler to lead, and we focused on the things they already loved about Disney. This approach has changed the way I experience Disney to this day. I stoppe park hopping with my toddler and we prioritize naps at the resort midday. We don't rope drop unless we want to, and we use tools like Genie+ because DISNEY INFANTS ARE FREE. Book the dessert party for Magic Kingdom and EPCOT because THEY ARE FREE. I am telling you to take advantage of that magic time when they are free. Looking back at all four of my children now, I am so happy that I experienced the magic with them when they were young. And I promise you will too along as you know you do not have to do it all!
