Disney has always been a master of storytelling, captivating audiences with its magical tales and enchanting characters. But with Drawn to Life, Disney has taken storytelling to a whole new level by combining the art of animation with the mesmerizing performance of Cirque du Soleil. Located at Disney Springs, this show is a must-see for Disney fans and anyone who appreciates the beauty of live performance.

Drawn to Life is the latest Cirque du Soleil show at Disney Springs, which opened on November 18, 2021. The show replaced La Nouba, a longtime fan favorite, but Drawn to Life brings a fresh perspective by blending Cirque’s stunning acrobatics with Disney’s rich history of animation. Tickets range from $85 to $185 depending on the seating section, with a variety of packages and VIP experiences available.

Overview of Drawn to Life

Drawn to Life is a collaborative masterpiece between Cirque du Soleil, Walt Disney Animation Studios, and Walt Disney Imagineering. It’s a live, acrobatic journey that pays homage to Disney's timeless animation and the rich history of its creation. The story follows Julie, a courageous young girl who discovers an unfinished animation left behind by her late father. As Julie dives into the magical world of animation, she encounters whimsical characters and learns about the principles of Disney animation: squash and stretch, anticipation, follow-through, and more.

The Story and Its Emotional Core

At its heart, Drawn to Life is about the bond between a father and daughter and the legacy of art and imagination that lives on even after a loved one has passed. This emotional storyline is woven seamlessly into the fabric of the show, making it both visually stunning and deeply moving. It’s a story that resonates with anyone who has ever lost someone dear or has cherished memories of a parent or mentor who has influenced their creative path.

The narrative is easy to follow, even for those who might not be familiar with the technical aspects of animation. The show uses its characters, music, and visual effects to create an emotional connection with the audience, making them feel like they are part of Julie’s journey.

A Visual Feast

True to Cirque du Soleil’s reputation, Drawn to Life is an extraordinary visual spectacle. From the moment the curtain rises, the stage is filled with vibrant colors, elaborate costumes, and breathtaking acrobatics. The set design is ingenious, incorporating elements that pay tribute to classic Disney animation. Oversized pencils, sketchbooks, and animation desks transform the stage into a giant animator’s workspace, drawing the audience into Julie's fantastical adventure.

Each act of the performance represents a different aspect of animation, brought to life by Cirque’s talented cast of acrobats, dancers, and performers. From aerial silks to trampoline acts, the choreography is designed to mimic the fluidity and motion of animation itself, creating a seamless blend of artistry and athleticism. The performers move with the grace of animated characters, flipping and flying across the stage in ways that defy gravity and leave the audience in awe.

Music and Sound Design

The music in Drawn to Life is a perfect marriage of Disney's classic melodies and Cirque du Soleil’s unique soundscapes. Composed by Benoît Jutras, the score blends familiar Disney tunes with new, original pieces that evoke a sense of wonder and nostalgia. The sound design is immersive, with sound effects and musical cues that enhance the action on stage, making every moment feel alive and dynamic.

A Perfect Evening at Disney Springs

One of the great things about "Drawn to Life" is its location at Disney Springs, an entertainment and dining hub at Walt Disney World Resort. This makes it easy to plan an entire evening around the show. Before the performance, you can enjoy dinner at one of the many fantastic restaurants nearby, such as Chef Art Smith's Homecomin' or The Boathouse. After the show, the lively atmosphere of Disney Springs invites you to explore more, with options for dessert, shopping, or live music.

We went on a perfect date night before the Cirque du Soleil show at Disney Springs, at California Grill. Located at Disney's Contemporary Resort, this signature restaurant offers stunning views of Magic Kingdom and a romantic ambiance. The menu features fresh, seasonal dishes with a focus on gourmet California-inspired cuisine, including sushi, steaks, and seafood. Time your reservation around sunset for breathtaking views, and enjoy a glass of wine from their extensive selection before heading over to Disney Springs for the show. It’s the ideal blend of fine dining and unforgettable entertainment.

Arriving Early and Pre-Show Tips

I recommend arriving about an hour before showtime to take advantage of parking and allow time to explore Disney Springs. Parking can be found at the Orange, Lime, and Grapefruit Garages, with Lime being the most convenient for Cirque du Soleil's venue, the iconic white tent. Or you can take an uber which is what we did.

Show Duration and Highlights

The show runs for approximately 90 minutes without intermission, and it’s packed with mesmerizing performances that make time fly. The story follows a young girl named Julie, whose father, a Disney animator, leaves her a final, unfinished animation. Julie embarks on a magical journey into the world of animation, blending classic Disney characters with the artistry of Cirque’s world-class acrobatics.

Some of the show’s biggest highlights include:

  • The Animators’ Drawing Table – A unique act where performers bring drawings to life with intricate, synchronized movement on and around a giant animators' table.

  • Trampoline and Aerial Acts – As expected from Cirque, the athleticism and artistry of the acrobats are jaw-dropping. The show includes sequences with trampolines, aerial silks, and contortion that tie into Disney’s animated worlds.

  • Hand-to-Hand Balancing Act – A signature Cirque act where two performers showcase incredible strength and precision, symbolizing the creation and collaboration between animators.

The way Drawn to Life integrates Disney’s beloved characters, animation process, and classic music throughout the show ensures any Disney fan will be enchanted from start to finish.
