A Guide to Transportation Options from Sanford Airport to Walt Disney World Resort

When you think of flying into Orlando for a magical trip to Walt Disney World Resort, Orlando International Airport (MCO) may be the first airport that comes to mind. However, Sanford International Airport (SFB), located about 45 miles north of Walt Disney World, is a lesser-known alternative that some travelers use—especially those flying budget airlines like Allegiant Air. If you're flying into Sanford, planning transportation to Walt Disney World is essential, as the airport doesn’t offer the same extensive services as MCO. But don’t worry—there are plenty of options to get you to the magic.

In this guide, we'll explore the transportation options available from Sanford Airport to Walt Disney World Resort, including car rentals, shuttle services, ride-sharing, and private transfers.

1. Car Rentals

One of the most convenient options for families or large groups is renting a car. Renting a vehicle allows for flexibility in your schedule, gives you freedom to explore Orlando beyond Disney, and eliminates the need to wait for shuttles or ride-shares. Sanford Airport hosts a variety of rental car companies like:

Car Rental at Sanford Airport

  • Alamo

  • Avis

  • Budget

  • Enterprise

  • Hertz

  • National

Pros:

  • Flexibility to explore Orlando at your own pace.

  • Can visit other attractions like Universal Studios, SeaWorld, or shopping areas.

  • No need to wait for public transport or rideshares.

Cons:

  • Additional expenses like gas, parking, and tolls.

  • Disney parking fees can add up (currently $25 per day for standard parking at the theme parks, but it is FREE if you are staying on property).

  • May not be ideal if you’re unfamiliar with Orlando’s roads.

  • One year we got the LAST carseat because they were so busy!

2. Ride-Sharing Services (Uber/Lyft)

Ride-sharing apps like Uber and Lyft are increasingly popular for travelers needing point-to-point transportation. Both services are available at Sanford Airport, and they provide a more direct and private way to travel to Walt Disney World Resort.

Smart Travel Tip: Timing Your Ride

If you're considering using ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft from Sanford Airport to Walt Disney World, here’s a pro tip: wait about 20 minutes after landing before booking your ride.

During this time, you can allow other passengers to disembark and order their rides, which often leads to a drop in demand. By waiting, you can save significantly on your fare. In my experience, I have never paid more than $65 for my ride when I use this strategy.

This simple adjustment can make a big difference in your travel budget, allowing you to allocate those savings toward enjoying more magical experiences at Disney!

Estimated Costs:

  • UberX/Lyft: $75-$100

  • UberXL/LyftXL (for larger groups): $100-$150

Prices can vary depending on the time of day, demand, and traffic.

Pros:

  • Convenient and easy to book from your phone.

  • Private transportation for you and your party.

  • No need to worry about parking or tolls.

Cons:

  • Surge pricing may lead to higher costs during peak times.

  • Not as cost-effective for larger groups compared to shuttles or rentals.

  • Requires waiting for the driver, and availability can vary.

3. Shuttle Services

Many third-party shuttle services offer transportation from Sanford Airport to Walt Disney World. While Sanford doesn’t have the same number of dedicated Disney shuttles as MCO, several companies cater to travelers heading to Orlando’s top theme parks.

Some shuttle services to consider include:

  • Mears Transportation

  • SuperShuttle

  • Sanford Orlando Airport Shuttle

Shuttle services are often shared, meaning you’ll be riding with other travelers heading in the same direction. Prices are generally per person and start around $25-$40 for adults and $15-$25 for children.

Pros:

MEARS Taxi Service

  • Lower cost, especially for solo travelers or small groups.

  • Convenient drop-off at your Disney resort or the theme parks.

  • No need to worry about driving or parking.

Cons:

  • May involve waiting for other passengers, leading to longer travel times.

  • Less flexible with departure times than a rental car or ride-share.

4. Private Car or Van Service

For those who prefer comfort and convenience, booking a private car or van service is an excellent option. Several companies offer private transfers from Sanford Airport to Walt Disney World Resort, ensuring a stress-free experience from airport pickup to drop-off.

Some of the popular private transport companies include:

  • Happy Limo

  • Orlando Transportation by Mike

  • MEARS

These services typically offer luxury vehicles like sedans, SUVs, or even limousines for a flat rate.

Estimated Costs:

  • Sedan (for up to 3 passengers): $130-$150 one way.

  • SUV or Van (for up to 7 passengers): $150-$200 one way.

Pros:

  • Direct, private service.

  • No waiting for other passengers.

  • Professional drivers familiar with the area.

Cons:

  • Higher cost compared to shuttles or ride-shares.

  • Must book in advance.

5. Taxis

Taxis are available at Sanford Airport, but they are generally more expensive than ride-sharing services or shuttles. If you prefer traditional taxi service, you can find taxis waiting outside the terminal.

Estimated Costs:

  • $150-$200 one way depending on traffic and time of day.

Pros:

  • No need to wait for an Uber or Lyft to arrive.

  • Direct, door-to-door service.

Cons:

  • Typically more expensive than other options.

  • May not be as comfortable or modern as private car services.

6. Public Transportation

If you’re looking for the most budget-friendly option, public transportation is available from Sanford to Walt Disney World Resort. However, be prepared for a longer and more complicated journey involving multiple transfers.

  • Take the Lynx Bus route from Sanford to Orlando, then transfer to other routes heading toward Disney. This option may cost around $5-$10, but travel time can exceed 2-3 hours, depending on the routes.

Pros:

  • Extremely low cost.

  • Great for travelers on a tight budget.

Cons:

  • Long travel time and multiple transfers.

  • Less convenient with luggage or small children.

For those lucky enough to live near a regional airport, like me, flying into Sanford International Airport can be incredibly convenient. I live just 15 minutes away from the airport, which makes travel to Orlando a breeze. The ease of getting to and from the airport means less stress and more time to enjoy the magic of Disney!

By flying from a regional airport, you often find shorter security lines, quicker boarding processes, and less congestion than at larger international airports. This can enhance your overall travel experience and allow you to kick off your vacation as soon as you land.

So, if you have the option to use a regional airport like Sanford, take advantage of the convenience and ease it brings to your trip!

While flying into Sanford Airport may not be as common as arriving at Orlando International, there are plenty of transportation options to get you to the magic of Walt Disney World Resort. Whether you prefer the freedom of a rental car, the convenience of ride-sharing, or the affordability of shuttle services, there's a solution for every traveler’s needs.

When planning your trip, consider your budget, group size, and how much flexibility you want. With the right choice, your vacation can start as soon as you land! Safe travels and enjoy the magic!
